Bard has an affiliation with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, which was established in Vilna (then Wilno, Poland and today Vilnius, Lithuania) in 1925 as the first institution devoted to scholarship in Yiddish, the traditional vernacular language of European Jewry, and about the history and culture of Yiddish-speaking communities.

Programs

Bard co-sponsors a number of YIVO’s academic programs:

  • The Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture, established in 1968, is the oldest intensive Yiddish summer program in the world..
  • The YIVO-Bard Winter Program in Ashkenazi Civilization offers courses for Bard credit during January intersession focusing on a variety of topics in Jewish history and culture.
  • YIVO also offers internships to college students.

History

Located since 1940 in New York and today part of the Center for Jewish History, YIVO houses the world’s largest research collections on East European Jewry as well as important resources for the study of American Jewish history and the Holocaust. You can read more about the history of YIVO in the link below.
